Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) presents a new Broadway production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, directed by and starring Tony Award® winner Brian Bedford. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is a glorious comedy of mistaken identity, which ridicules codes of propriety and etiquette. Dashing men-about-town John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff pursue fair ladies Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. Matters are complicated by the imaginary characters invented by both men to cover their on-the-sly activities – not to mention the disapproval of Gwendolen’s mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival produced a production of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST in 2009 directed by and starring Bedford. Commissioned by Atlantic, this new world premiere adaptation by Tony Award® winner David Auburn of the 1906 original play by Langdon Mitchell is directed by Mark Brokaw. Cynthia Karslake is a freewheeling young divorcee in New York City society. She has decided to settle down again into a much more stable, reliable relationship with the prominent Judge Philip Phillimore. Little does she know, however, that neither of their impetuous and blowsy ex-spouses, nor her beloved race horse Cynthia K, is yet down for the count. In this sharp-tongued comedy, Auburn sheds new light on a little-known play from a century ago that offers a surprisingly contemporary look at social mores, status and attitudes about sex and divorce in upper crust New York.

NAKED FOOTPRINTS: AN ISSUES PROJECT
NAKED ANGELS’ signature fast-paced, raucous and irreverent festival of original material exploring urgent issues of the day.
The semi-annual Issues Project is NAKED ANGELS’ signature event consisting of original one-acts, radio plays with live foley, new music, comedic film shorts, stand-up comedy and lively political discussion.
Written and performed by family and friends of the company, the Issues Project is traditionally a homecoming for NAKED ANGELS – with participants ranging from the company’s famous founding members to the emerging generation (the current Naked Radio Writers Room).
This year, the Issues Project tackles “sustainability” in an evening called NAKED FOOTPRINTS. Whether discussing the environment or troubleshooting how to rescue our depressed economy, it’s clear that leading a more sustainable life demands we conduct our businesses, culture and politics differently to secure a healthy future. Issues Project will also explore how sustainability relates to us as individuals – our relationships, families and moral codes.

Tony and Olivier Award winning star Mark Rylance will recreate his wildly acclaimed, multi award-winning performance as Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron on Broadway this spring in the Royal Court Theatre production of Jez Butterworth’s universally heralded new play, JERUSALEM. The production, directed by Ian Rickson, will also star Mackenzie Crook as Ginger and most of the original Royal Court cast, with full casting to be announced at a later date.
In the woods of South West England, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron (Mark Rylance), former daredevil motorcyclist and modern-day Pied Piper, is a wanted man. The council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, his son wants to be taken to the country fair, a stepfather wants to give him a serious kicking and a motley crew of friends wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol.
JERUSALEM opened at the Royal Court Theatre in July, 2009 with critics praising playwright Jez Butterworth’s beautiful and comic elegy for a disappearing way of life in rural England and actor Mark Rylance, who was lauded as delivering one of the great stage performances of our time. The production played an extended sold out run at the Royal Court, before moving to the Apollo Theatre in the West End in January, 2010, where it received an unprecedented set of five-star reviews from 12 London newspapers.

THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES
Ben Stiller, Edie Falco and Jennifer Jason Leigh will return to Broadway in the revival of John Guare’s THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, directed by David Cromer. In THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, Pope Paul VI’s 1965 visit to New York City brings the hope of answered prayers and a few unexpected guests to an apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, where Artie Shaughnessy, a zookeeper, pines for a new life as a popular songwriter. His dreams of stardom are complicated by a stay-at-home wife (her name is, appropriately, Bananas) who longs for the happiness of their salad days, a pushy mistress who is already packing her bags for Hollywood and an AWOL son with his own plans for becoming famous. A heartbreaking human comedy that explores the lengths people will go in pursuit of the American Dream. The production will be produced by Scott Rudin. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

THE ILLUSION
Signature Theatre Company’s (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin) 2010-2011 season celebrating Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner will include THE ILLUSION, Kushner’s freely adapted version of Pierre Corneille’s L’Illusion Comique, directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer. A lawyer, facing mortality, desperate to find the son he drove away years before, travels in the dead of night to a mysterious cave. There he engages the services of a wizard, who conjures up visions of the romantic, adventurous, perilous life the lawyer’s son has been living since his father expelled him from home. The Illusion, freely adapted from Pierre Corneille’s L’Illusion Comique, is Kushner’s most joyfully theatrical play, a wildly entertaining tale of passion and regret, of love, disillusionment and magic.

Marie Brenner’s acclaimed memoir about her strained, heartwarming, and funny relationship with her brother, Apples and Oranges, is adapted for the stage by Pulitzer, Tony, and Academy Award winning author Alfred Uhry. A medical crisis brings Marie, a classic New York liberal and investigative journalist for Vanity Fair and Carl, a conservative apple grower living in Washington State, together after many years apart. While Marie abandons her life to help her dying brother, Carl fights her every step of the way. CARL’S SISTER tells the story of their attempts to heal and understand one another.

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s 44 member acting ensemble will perform five plays by William Shakespeare at Park Avenue Armory as part of Lincoln Center Festival in Summer 2011. Lincoln Center Festival and Park Avenue Armory, in association with The Ohio State University, are bringing the Royal Shakespeare Company to New York for this six-week engagement. This unprecedented theatrical event will include five productions currently playing in repertoire to critical praise at the Company’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon. Included are: As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, and The Winter’s Tale. The Lincoln Center Festival performances will be the only opportunity American audiences will have to see these highly acclaimed productions performed by an acting company at the culmination of three years of working together, playing multiple roles, in the same ensemble acting tradition that characterized the troupes in Shakespeare’s time.
