After a record-breaking weekend of visitors on Governors Island, there are now only four more opportunities to experience the New Island Festival. The international arts festival will play Thursday, September 17th through Sunday, September 20th only. The New Island Festival marks the first time Governors Island has been open to the public at night. The festival’s nightlife allows attendees to experience performances by world-class artists set against the background of the New York City skyline. The Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the heart of the festival, offering great food, drink and free impromptu performances through the late evening. The ferry is free and runs between Manhattan and Governors Island until midnight.

One of the highlights of the New Island Festival is the “Silent Disco” at the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. These noiseless dance parties have become an international sensation, electrifying crowds from Ireland to Australia, Romania to Indonesia. Now New Yorkers can experience what everyone’s been talking about, various times between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. There is also a “Silent Disco” just for kids in the afternoons, various times between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The New Island Festival on NYC’s Governors Island brings the greatest elements of European outdoor performing arts festivals to Governors Island. It will combine works that have previously been featured in the world-renowned Dutch “Oerol” and “De Parade” festivals and provide opportunities for artists to create site-specific works on the island. All of Governors Island will be the stage for the Dutch, who will utilize the waterfront promenade, historic homes, barracks and open green spaces to re-imagine this island in the middle of New York harbor.

The New Island Festival is part of NY400, which celebrates the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage from Amsterdam to New York Harbor, and commemorates 400 years of enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the United States.

PRODUCERS/SPONSORS

New Island Festival comes to New York under the artistic leadership of Joop Mulder (Oerol Festival) and Terts Brinkhoff (de Parade/Mobile Arts).
