In Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical, three friends set out on a fabulous journey through the Australian outback courtesy of the show’s title “character” Priscilla the bus. Clocking in at just over 28 feet long and weighing five tons, Priscilla sits on a rotating mechanism that tracks up and down stage and moves laterally, giving her the ability to turn corners onstage. Priscilla contains a retractable side panel and three internal lifts; her wheels move, she bounces over roadkill, and she changes her costume (and color) thanks to 30,000 LED lights on all sides that display images all over her.

NEW YORK REHEARSALS BEGIN WEDNESDAY

Olivier Award nominee Tony Sheldon, who will star as “Bernadette” in the upcoming pre-Broadway North American production of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical, is featured in The Toronto Star with an exclusive profile by Richard Ouzounian in advance of New York rehearsals beginning tomorrow.

THE TORONTO STAR – August 23, 2010

Back to Priscilla Queen of the killer corset – Priscilla Queen of the killer corset

By Richard Ouzounian

NEW YORK- It’s no wonder that Tony Sheldon should have no trouble singing “I Am Woman.” After all, his aunt, Helen Reddy is the star who first made the number a hit.

That’s just one of the theatrical tidbits that Sheldon gleefully dispenses in an exclusive interview, while munching on a BLT sandwich in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood just before he starts rehearsing the leading role of Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical, Wednesday.

The show has already been a giant hit in Australia and London, with Sheldon earning kudos for his performance on both continents.

Now the rag-tag bunch of drag queens who first conquered the hearts of the world in the 1994 cult film about outcasts in the outback have set their sights on greener pastures.

After rehearsing in Manhattan, they’ll hit Toronto on Oct. 12 for the North American premiere of the show, finally winding up on Broadway in March 2011.

The dapper 55-year-old Sheldon is charm itself as he talks about his long and winding road to disco-ing his way across the desert in the multicoloured bus that gives the show its title.
