Jersey Boys gets raves in Providence

JERSEY BOYS

GETS RAVES IN

PROVIDENCE

JERSEY BOYS, the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical, received rave reviews in Providence at the Providence Performing Arts Center, where it opened Friday, May 14 (performances began May 12) and will play through Sunday, June 6.  From Providence, JERSEY BOYS will play Indianapolis, IN’s Murat Theatre Wednesday, June 9 through Sunday, July 3.

PROVIDENCE JOURNAL
The Providence Journal’s Channing Gray raved “It’s hard to imagine anything derailing the phenomenon that is JERSEY BOYS.  The musical is among the top grossers on Broadway and breaking box office records wherever it plays. It’s a bona fide smash.  And the show lives up to the hype. The JERSEY BOYS tour that arrived last week at the Providence Performing Arts Center deserves the glowing reviews. It’s got an intriguing story to tell with lots of golden oldies tossed in for good measure, while the singing, especially the high falsetto licks from Joseph Leo Bwarie, is fabulous. Bwarie, who’s a tiny guy, turned out to be something of a sensation, and not just because of his stratospheric top register. He’s got a butter-smooth tenor that was just as fine singing sultry tunes such as ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.’  The whole quartet was terrific, singing with lots of edge and sounding just like the Seasons. In all, there are just shy of three-dozen songs in the show, which is quite a workout for Bwarie and the band. But on opening night the guys were up to the task, singing as though the music were written yesterday.”

GETS RAVES IN
CHARLOTTE

JERSEY BOYS, the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical, received rave reviews in Charlotte, NC at the Belk Theatre at the Blumenthal Center where it opened Friday, April 2 (performances began March 31) and will play through Sunday, April 18.  From Charlotte, JERSEY BOYS will play Buffalo, NY’s Shea Performing Arts Center Wednesday, April 21 through Sunday, May 9.

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER
Lawrence Toppman of the Charlotte Observer, writes:

When Rolling Stone ranked the 500 greatest pop songs of all time last year, The Four Seasons didn’t make the list even once.

Maybe they were mainstream too long ago for hip pundits to care today. Maybe they were too derivative or calculatedly commercial. Maybe British Invasion and Motown groups are all critics recall of the first half of the 1960s. But theatergoers who’ve bought out a three-week run of “Jersey Boys” do remember.

Some are drawn by hype: four Tonys (including best musical), a Grammy for the cast album and acclaim from critics and folks who saw it in New York or Las Vegas or on tour. (Charlotte had to wait an extra year; Belk Theater didn’t have a multi-week slot for it last season.)

They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were thirty.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of JERSEY BOYS was produced by Bob Gaudio, and was recently certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The cast recording is now available on Rhino Records. JERSEY BOYS: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (Broadway Books) is the official handbook to the smash Broadway hit.
