Associated Press raves about MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Cherry Jones and Sally Hawkins team up to make Shaw’s ‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ relevant again

By Mark Kennedy

NEW YORK, N.Y. — George Bernard Shaw’s “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” hasn’t had a happy life. An early work by the playwright, it was banned virtually as soon as it was written and has never been considered among his best. Even Shaw labeled it one of his “plays unpleasant.”

A new revival by the Roundabout Theatre Company, then, comes as a happy surprise. Helmed by Doug Hughes and starring Cherry Jones and Sally Hawkins, the work is made urgent and subversive.

The profession of the title — not to mince words — is sex. Shaw has used the topic of prostitution to expose hypocrisy in “respectable” Victorian England, assail capitalism and explore mother-daughter relationships.

MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION star Cherry Jones in NY Times

Roundabout’s MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION is currently in previews at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway, where it opens officially on Sunday, October 3rd.

Single, and Singular, Women Become Her

By CHARLES McGRATH

CHERRY JONES has made a specialty lately of playing iron-willed women. She was the terrifying, unyielding Sister Aloysius in the stage version of “Doubt,” for which she won a Tony. More recently, for two seasons on the television series “24,” she was Allison Taylor, the first female president of the United States, who stood up to the Russians and the crazed dictator of Sangala and had her own daughter arrested.

On Oct. 3 she opens in the Roundabout Theater Company revival of George Bernard Shaw’s “Mrs. Warren’s Profession,” playing the title character, the self-made owner of a string of brothels whose daughter would probably like to lock her up, or at least shut her out of her life.

BBB Fall Preview: Mrs. Warren’s Profession

MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION

Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) presents a new Broadway production of George Bernard Shaw’s MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION, starring Tony® Award winner Cherry Jones as ‘Kitty Warren’ & Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins making her Broadway debut as ‘Vivie Warren’, directed by Tony® Award winner Doug Hughes. George Bernard Shaw’s scorching tour de force MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION tells the story of Kitty Warren (Jones), a mother who makes a terrible sacrifice for her daughter Vivie’s (Hawkins) independence.  The clash of these two strong-willed but culturally constrained women is the spark that ignites the ironic wit of one of Shaw’s greatest plays. The cast will also feature Adam Driver as ‘Frank Gardner’, Mark Harelik as ‘Sir George Crofts’, Edward Hibbert as ‘Mr. Praed’ & Michael Siberry as ‘Reverend Samuel Gardner.’

Previews begin September 3, 2010 / Opens October 3, 2010 / Limited Engagement
