SHORT TAKES WITH MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET’s ROBERT BRITTON LYONS

Robert Britton Lyons has made his Broadway debut as Carl Perkins in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. We pulled Robert aside, after opening night, to get to know him and asked a few questions. See what he had to say.

1.What album, book and movie are you recommending to friends these days?

Really loved INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. Like, crazy loved it.

I’m in the middle of reading GOD BLESS YOU, MR. ROSEWATER by Kurt Vonnegut and am having an excellent time with that one.

As far as albums…For sheer entertainment value, Adira Amram’s HOT JAMS FOR TEENS and Steel Panther’s STEEL PANTHER are brilliant bits of comedic gold. For some killer stripped down rock, Band Of SkullsBABY DARLING DOLL FACE HONEY” is killer as is The Noisette’s “WHAT’S THE TIME, MR. WOLF.”  Trippy art-rock goes to Mutemath’sARMISTICE.” All good, all different and not nearly all that I’m into.

2. What country (other than the US) would you most like to visit?

Spain, Paris, Australia. Can I just say “All countries”? That would be the honest answer.

3. What musician, composer or pop icon would you most like to be stranded with on a desert island? Why?

For artistic reasons, Joshua Homme (QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, THEM CROOKED VULTURES, EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, etc….), for other (obvious) reasons, Shakira.

4. What’s your favorite city or venue to play a gig at?

Loved playing the Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood and Kingston Mines in Chicago.

The Crocodile in Seattle is awesome as well.

5.  What’s the last song you downloaded to your iPod?

“STYLO” from Gorillaz. It’s off the new album.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the new musical inspired by the night an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock and Roll,” who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET opened Sunday, April 11 at the Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street).

This musical, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, is not affiliated with, or authorized by, Sun Records, Sam Phillips, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins or any of their successors in interest and no such affiliation or authorization should be inferred.
