Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (the Center) are pleased to announce BROADWAY BACKWARDS 6, a one-night-only event, will be held Monday, February 7, 2011 at 8 PM at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre (220 W. 48^th Street). BROADWAY BACKWARDS 6 is produced by BC/EFA and will benefit BC/EFA and the Center.

Never underestimate the power of a pronoun! BROADWAY BACKWARDS is the only annual Broadway event custom-made for the gay and lesbian community, their friends and family and will feature some of Broadway’s biggest names singing songs originally written for the opposite gender: women singing songs written for men and men singing songs written for women. By keeping all of the lyrics intact, including the original pronouns, each song takes on an entirely new dimension, sometimes with hysterical results and sometimes with immensely touching results. BROADWAY BACKWARDS will give its audience a chance to see and hear some of the most treasured songs of the Great White Way in a whole new key.

Creator Robert Bartley will again direct and choreograph with musical direction by Chris Haberl. Last year’s sold out show featured dazzling performances from an impressive line-up of stars boasting four Tony Awards and 20 Tony Award nominations.

RAISES $3,776,720

The 22^nd Annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition raised $3,776,720 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, thanks to the tireless work of 63 participating Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies, it was announced Tuesday. Since 1989, the 22 editions of GYPSY OF THE YEAR have raised a total of $44,137,415 to benefit BC/EFA.

This year’s GYPSY OF THE YEAR also marked the return to the New York stage of three-time Tony Award-winner Carol Channing, who was featured in the show’s opening number, a tribute to the legendary star’s many appearances on Broadway over the last 70 years. After being serenaded by a chorus of male dancers, many from the 1995 revival of Hello, Dolly!, Channing sang two of her most-beloved songs, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “Hello, Dolly.”

GYPSY OF THE YEAR is the culmination of six weeks of intensive fundraising where the theater community’s most talented “gypsies,” chorus members from Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring shows, join in a competition/variety show.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will present the 22^nd Annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION on Monday, December 6 (4:30 PM) and Tuesday, December 7 (2 PM) at the New Amsterdam Theatre (214 W. 42^nd Street). The proceeds from the event, a dazzling once-a-year variety show filled with lavish musical numbers, original skits and Broadway stars, will benefit BC/EFA.

This year’s GYPSY OF THE YEAR will be hosted by Broadway personality Seth Rudetsky (“Seth’s Big Fat Broadway” on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio).

As previously announced, the opening number will feature the legendary Carol Channing performing some of her most beloved songs. The number will be staged by choreographers Melissa Rae Mahon and Sean McKnight with musical direction by Ben Cohn, special lyrics by Rob Krausz and costumes by Brian Hemesath.

This year’s judges include Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley (Next to Normal); Alison Fraser (The Divine Sister); Boyd Gaines (Driving Miss Daisy); Bebe Neuwirth (The Addams Family); Eve Plumb (Miss Abigail’s Guide…); Patricia White (President, Local 764 – Theatrical Wardrobe Union); and Nick Wyman (President of Actors’ Equity).

This year’s celebrity presenters include Hunter Ryan Herdlicka (A Little Night Music), Cherry Jones (Mrs. Warren’s Profession), T.R. Knight (A Life in the Theatre), Judith Light (Lombardi), Bernadette Peters (A Little Night Music), David Hyde Pierce (La Bête), Billy Porter (Angels in America), Colin Quinn (Colin Quinn Long Story Short) and Elizabeth Stanley (Million Dollar Quartet).

Shows scheduled to present include: The Addams Family; Billy Elliot; Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson; Chicago; Fela; In The Heights; the national tour of Jersey Boys; La Cage aux Folles; The Lion King; Mamma Mia; Mary Poppins; the national tour of Mary Poppins; My Big Gay Italian Wedding; Promises, Promises; Rock of Ages; Wicked; and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

There also will be a special presentation by choreographer Shea Sullivan in tribute to the 60^th anniversary of the Gypsy Robe, a Broadway tradition passed on opening nights from musical-to-musical honoring each show’s chorus member with the most Broadway credits.

Described as “possibly the season’s most dazzling talent show,” the GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION, the all-singing, all-dancing, all-dishing extravaganza, is easily the biggest party in town! Organizers of the event are expecting performers from Broadway and Off-Broadway’s biggest and most lavish productions.

THE GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION is the culmination of six weeks of fundraising when shows on and Off-Broadway engage in a friendly competition to see which show can raise the most money for the organization.  Awards are presented to the companies that raise the most money and for the winning presentation.

The 24^th Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction held yesterday Sunday, September 26, raised a grand total of $476,917 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA).

Since its debut in 1987, which then raised $12,000, the 24 editions of The Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction have raised a grand total of $8,638,669 for BC/EFA.

The Flea Market and Grand Auction is an annual fair in which Broadway, Off-Broadway and other members of the theatrical community donate and sell their wares to benefit BC/EFA.  The event also included the Celebrity Table, where celebrities gathered throughout the day to sign autographs and pose for photos in exchange for donations.  The climax of the day was the Grand Auction in which truly unique and priceless items are auctioned off live to the highest bidder.
