Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director), in association with Jonathan Reinis, Jamie Cesa, Eva Price & Berkeley Repertory Theatre, is proud to present the Broadway premiere production of Wishful Drinking, created and performed by Carrie Fisher and directed by Tony Taccone at Studio 54 on Broadway (254 West 54th St).

Wishful Drinking will open officially on Sunday, October 4th, 2009. This is a limited engagement through January 3rd, 2010.

The daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher became a cultural icon when she starred as “Princess Leia” in the first Star Wars trilogy at 19 years old. Forever changed, Carrie’s life did not stay picture perfect.  Fisher is the life of the party in this uproarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover.

WISHFUL DRINKING’s Fisher visits Studio 54 with New Yorker

The Talk Of The Town

Stomping Grounds

By MICHAEL SCHULMAN

A long time ago, in a galaxy called midtown, Paul Simon took Carrie Fisher on a date to Studio 54. “We had met in L.A.,” Fisher recalled recently. “Paul was with Shelley Duvall, and I was with the producer of ‘Star Wars,’ a Quaker named Gary Kurtz. I really missed out on that action.” Not long after that first meeting, they ran into each other again at “Saturday Night Live” and wound up on the dance floor at Studio 54. In 1983, they were married. “I just remember seeing him dance, and knowing later that it was a rare occurrence,” Fisher said. The marriage didn’t last, and neither did Studio 54: it closed in 1986 and later reopened as a Broadway theatre, where Fisher is about to start previews of her one-woman show, “Wishful Drinking.”

It was noon on a Tuesday, and some producers were giving Fisher a tour of the theatre. She had not set foot there since it was a disco. “My mind is just cheese,” she announced, entering the lobby. (In the show, Fisher recounts, among other things, her experiences with electroconvulsive therapy, which has stabilized her bipolar disorder but leaves her occasionally disoriented.) She wore a black pashmina, sparkly eye-shadow, and red sandals. Inside the theatre, she stood by a row of seats and peered into the balcony. ‘That was where everyone went to do drugs and have sex,” she said. “That’s what I heard, anyway. I didn’t do that! Drugs, yes.”

The show, like the life it chronicles, covers a lot of ground; being the daughter of Debbie Reynolds (age two: her father leaves her mother for Elizabeth Taylor), romantic travails (age thirty-six: the talent agent Bryan Lourd leaves her for another man), the Princess Leia years, rehab, mental illness (“I’m very sane about my insanity,” she often says). When the Roundabout offered her the chance to play Studio 54, Fisher embraced he irony. “I’m only going to play theatres where I’ve been really high,” she said.

The producers led Fisher down a stairway and into a drab backstage area. “This is usually our musicians’ room. It’s storage right now,” Sydney Beers, the company’s general manager, said. It triggered a Studio 54 flashback.
