Atlantic Theater Company and Druid‘s celebrated production of Academy Award® winner and four-time Tony Award® nominee Martin McDonagh‘s dark comedy THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN will celebrate its 100th performance on Thursday, March 5th, 2009.

 

The smash hit play, which was extended twice after opening to unanimous critical acclaim, is playing its final weeks through Saturday evening, March 14th Off Broadway at Atlantic’s Linda Gross Theater (336 West 20th Street).

 

The limited engagement originally scheduled through February 1st began previews December 9th and opened on December 21st, 2008. It was initially extended through March 1, 2009.

About the author:When Irish director Garry Hynes brought her Druid Theatre Company’s production of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane to New York in 1998, she did it with a bang. First the play, her New York directorial debut, was a smash success at off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company. Then it transferred to Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre, scoring half a dozen Tony Award nominations. Finally came the icing on the cake: Hynes won the Tony for Best Director of a play, making her the first woman in history to be honored with the prize. Ten years later, she’s is back at Atlantic, bringing her Galway company’s acclaimed production of another McDonagh play, The Cripple of Inishmaan, to New York audiences. Hynes took time from her globe-trotting schedule to explain how she discovered a little-known playwright who went on to receive four Best Play Tony nominations while winning one Oscar (for his 2006 short film Six Shooter) and being nominated for a second one (for his In Bruges screenplay).

Martin McDonagh, Druid Theatre and I have gone on such a long and eventful journey together that sometimes it is hard to believe that there was ever a beginning to it. This journey began soon after my return, in 1995, to Druid as Artistic Director after an absence of four years. One day I was dutifully sitting in my office reading through the unsolicited scripts that had been sent into the company in the previous year.

Duty turned suddenly to excitement as I read first one and then two more plays by a writer called Martin McDonagh who had an address in London. The language seemed so exciting that I started to read one of the plays aloud. Within minutes I was cracking up with laughter and sheer delight at the extraordinary richness of what I was hearing. I raced down the stairs to the main office to ask who this McDonagh guy was and what did we know about him? Very little, as it turned out, except that since he had first sent the plays to Druid he had gotten an agent and maybe had a play broadcast on radio in Australia. Radio? Australia?

For Aaron Monaghan, the physical demands of “The Cripple of Inishmaan” aren’t his toughest challenge.

In Martin McDonagh’s moving, crackling play The Cripple of Inishmaan (now at the Altantic Theater Company), the title character-a sensitive young man named Billy, disabled in body but strong of will-returns to his hardscrabble Irish isle after an unlikely brush with Hollywood and reports to his mates, “They decided to hire an actor who could act like a cripple rather than a cripple who can’t act at all.”

 

Audiences may wonder at that line, since the actor playing Billy definitely is Aaron Monaghan, a fiercely talented Irishman making his U.S. stage debut. So unknown is Monaghan on these shores, and so completely does he embody this fascinating, complicated character, that audiences must think: Is Aaron the real thing, like Billy, or an incredible simulation?

 

Curtain call is our first clue, when Monaghan joins the knockout Druid Theatre cast onstage for a bow. Gone is the inward-twisted foot, the cantilevered arm, the lurching walk. Monaghan is the real thing-not a disabled actor, but an actor who plays one so well we’re absolutely convinced.

 

And we’re a little worried: Can putting all his weight on the side of his ankle, as Monaghan does, really be healthy? “It does hurt,” says the Dublin-based and -trained actor. “I have to physically look after myself a lot. I think I’m potentially doing some damage. My routine is same with every show I do, but on this one I’ve extended it. I warm up for two hours and do a lot of limbering up.”

 

Monaghan’s preparation for the role, which he originated in its Irish production under McDonagh specialist Garry Hynes, included a mix of research and experimentation. Monaghan says he wanted to be responsible and sensitive to the conditions of the disabled-which meant, in his case, studying but not outright imitating their particular afflictions.

 

“I want to do it as realistically as possible,” Monaghan says, warming to a subject he says no one has asked him about. “In the play, Martin is deliberately vague: He says Billy has ‘one bad arm and one bad leg.’ He doesn’t say if it’s on the same side. So I tried to find out different conditions that would lead to that; there was nothing that fit it all spot-on. I looked at muscular dystrophy, and there are dozens of different types. So what I did was sort of pick and choose certain ailments.”

Currently: Playing the title role in Atlantic Theater Company’s production of Martin McDonagh’s black comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan, as a disabled young man looking to escape his provincial life in 1930s Ireland.

 

Rural Beginnings: Monaghan’s working-class Irish hometown-where “a lot of the people were related and everyone knew everyone else’s business” (not unlike the play’s Inishmaan)-couldn’t have been farther from the lights of Broadway. “I don’t think I watched a play until I was in college,” the actor admits, brogue rolling. The second youngest of seven children (plus two foster sisters), Monaghan spent his early years dreaming of architecture. “I wanted to design buildings,” he recalls. His focus shifted at 16 when a youth drama group started up in town. “I used to work in my father’s vegetable store after school, and I would get off one hour every Friday evening [to do] drama and improv. I loved it.”

 

A Play’s the Thing: The drama group eventually selected Monaghan for a scholarship to a weeklong theater camp, where he so impressed visiting playwright Declan Gorman that the writer penned a role specifically for young Aaron in his play Hades. “I had just turned 18 and had [been accepted] to school for architecture, and this guy offered me a part,” Monaghan recounts. “I said, ‘God, I’d like to do a professional play before I die!'” The budding actor accepted, joining the cast for six months with the intention of starting college the following September-though that plan soon derailed. “Someone handed me an application for the Samuel Beckett Center at Trinity College in Dublin, already filled out for me. I signed it, and the day I auditioned I realized [acting] was what I wanted to do.” Fortunately, he got in.

 

The Star of Inishmaan: In 2007, during a stint as Romeo in the Abbey’s production of Romeo and Juliet, Monaghan landed the starring role in Inishmaan, directed by Hynes. The darkly comic story of disabled Billy, who attempts to abandon Ireland and make it as an actor in Los Angeles in 1934, was met with acclaim during its initial run at Druid, launching a European tour that played in Los Angeles before landing off-Broadway. Monaghan explains the show’s black comedy is distinctly Irish: “[McDonagh] knocks that cruel sense of humor on the head. When characters make ‘Cripple Billy’ jokes, I don’t play offended because that offense isn’t there at home. We do so much slagging of one another, but it’s just funny and no one means any harm.”

When actress Marie Mullen came to the Atlantic Theater Company in 1998 as one of the stars of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, few people in the U.S. had heard of playwright Martin McDonagh.

 

That has changed. Since that year, when Beauty Queen moved to Broadway, was nominated for a Tony Award and won Mullen her own Tony, three other McDonagh plays have graced Broadway: The Lonesome West, The Pillowman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. The latter also began life at the Atlantic, the Off-Broadway theatre that is currently hosting a new and acclaimed production of McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan. Mullen is part of the ensemble of the Garry Hynes-directed co-production with The Druid Theatre, which also stars McDonagh veterans Andrew Connelly and Kerry Condon. She spoke to Playbill.com about McDonagh plays past and present.

 

Playbill.com: How has this experience compared to the first time you came to America with a Martin McDonagh play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane?

 

Marie Mullen: It’s a completely different play for me. I loved Beauty Queen. I got very emotionally involved in that, as the character, a woman who is not very stable mentally. We had to deal with things like the murder of an old lady and situations where a woman thought she had found love and it didn’t happen. The whole situation with Beauty Queen from a play point of view was very different from what I’m going through now as Kate. But for all that, the experience I’m having with this play is equally as exciting as the one I had with Beauty Queen. You know New Yorkers – they just get it. Sometimes they’re way ahead of us. They have no problems understanding Martin. They have no problems with the accents.

 

Playbill.com: When you came to New York with Beauty Queen, New York theatregoers knew nothing of Martin McDonagh and his work’s brutality came as something of a shock. Since then, theatregoers have had the opportunity to see almost every one of his plays. Do you feel you’re dealing with a more educated audience this time around, as far as knowledge of the playwright is concerned?

 

MM: I do. I can feel that familiarity. They immediately turn on to his style of writing. They’re more familiar with his style and what he’s trying to get at. I love Cripple because it’s a kind of redemption that we didn’t have in Beauty Queen. There’s a sense of a huge beating heart at the beginning of Cripple – though not a soft heart, because Martin, if he’s one thing, it isn’t soft and emotional. He’s firm and irreverent about people’s situations and how people should react, and he’s not very P.C. at times.

 

Playbill.com: Some of the critics have said Cripple represents a gentler version of McDonagh.

 

MM: That is very true, Robert. I think it is a gentler version. I think the humanity and the heart of the man comes through in Cripple and a sense of redemption for the boy who has never been kissed and who against all odds has found some kind of other level to operate on – with the girl and finding a place where he is loved. And there’s a real sense of the insular lives of people who live on an island together.

 

Playbill.com: What is your take on the nature of the play? At times it feels like a drama, at other times it’s comic, and still other times it almost seems like a satire, like McDonagh is making fun of the idea of the “Irish play.”

 

MM: I think that’s right. I think that he has taught the Irish nation to laugh at ourselves more. I think that’s healthy. We’re always going on about Yeats and O’Casey, and in my heart I love them. He makes us look at ourselves and say, “We have all these things, but also we’re known for being very silly.” He treats us like adults. He doesn’t spoon-feed us.

TWO LOOKS AT THE LUCK OF THE IRISH

Why do the Irish write such good plays? No doubt there’s some irresistibly compelling politico-cultural explanation, but as yet nobody’s vouchsafed it to me. All I know is that Conor McPherson and Martin McDonagh, two of the most gifted playwrights of our time, are currently represented on the stages of Chicago and New York by two of the best plays that I’ve had the pleasure to review in this space, and that both productions are excellent in every possible way.

 

As for the Off-Broadway revival of Martin McDonagh’s “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” which was last seen in New York a decade ago, I can only say that the Atlantic Theater Company has got itself a hit, one that will surely transfer to Broadway if anyone there has any sense.

 

Like Mr. McDonagh’s “The Lieutenant of Inishmore,” which scored a similar success when the Atlantic produced it in 2006, “The Cripple of Inishmaan” is a snarlingly black comedy whose subject is stage-Irishness, the smotheringly quaint charm that continues to be used, in Ireland and elsewhere, to paper over the harsh realities of village life. The island community of Inishmaan is an echo chamber in which everybody knows everybody else’s business and gossips about it ceaselessly and circularly: “I do worry awful about Billy when he’s late in returning, d’you know?” “Already once you’ve said that sentence.” To live in so narrow a place is agony to Billy (Aaron Monaghan), the title character, an orphan who longs with all his heart to break away and seek a wider, warmer world. The genius of “The Cripple of Inishmaan” is that it plays Billy’s plight for laughs, steering away from sentimentality and forcing the viewer to look squarely upon the ordinary sorrows of his daily life.

 

Unlike Steppenwolf’s production of “The Seafarer,” this revival is an all-Irish import. It was originally staged by Garry Hynes for the Druid Theater Company and features the same actors who were seen in Galway. I can’t imagine a more knowing performance: The members of Ms. Hynes’s cast understand in their bones what Mr. McDonagh’s play is about, and bring every line to startlingly vivid life. Playwrights dream of ensembles as fine as this one.
