NAKED ANGELS Celebrates 25 Years with One Big Ball – Valentine’s Day 2011

NAKED ANGELS

Celebrates 25th Anniversary with

ONE BIG BALL!

Valentine’s Day 2011

On Monday, February 14, 2011Valentine’s DayNaked Angels will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as one of the most innovative theatre companies in New York with a spectacular Gala at Roseland Ballroom (239 West 52nd Street). Naked Angels company members Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are Honorary Co-Chairs for the event. Conceived as an imagined history of Naked Angels – and promising to be bigger than all of the company’s previous parties put together – One Big Ball will be a frivolous and inauthentic romp through Naked Angels’ 25 years, written and performed by Naked Angels members, with many friends and surprise guests. Naked Angels company member and Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello directs the evening.

About February’s event, Sarah Jessica Parker said, “Matthew and I are thrilled to be a part of the Valentine’s festivities.  Naked Angels has always meant a great deal to me and my family, and I look forward to celebrating this incredible 25 year milestone.”

February’s celebratory event will bring the company and guests back to the beginning. The year was 1986. Reagan was president, Top Gun was raking it in at the box office, and the Beastie Boys ruled the airwaves. And there, in the midst of it all, on a hot summer’s night, at a dive bar in Hell’s Kitchen, a group of young artists were sharing a drink (or two) and dreaming of a place—a creative haven—where they could develop provocative and groundbreaking new work… and throw some kick-ass parties, too. And by the end of the night, as the place was emptying out and last call had been given, Naked Angels was born.

One Big Ball kicks off with a VIP cocktail reception at 6PM, followed by dinner and performances at 7:30PM. Proceeds from the event will help fund Naked Angels’ ongoing new play development.

Participating artists scheduled to appear:

Jace Alexander*, Taro Alexander*, Jon Robin Baitz*, Craig Bierko, Patrick Breen*, Nicole Burdette*, Bobby Cannavale, Kathleen Dennehy*, Paul S. Eckstein*, Ned Eisenberg*, Beth Emelson*, Noah Emmerich, James Gandolfini, Gina Gershon*, Brett Goldstein*, Paul Gruen*, Evan Handler, Mariska Hargitay, Instant Girl, Richard Kind, Christie Wagner Lee*, John Leguizamo, Warren Leight*, Ilana Levine*, Kenneth Lonergan*, Brian MacDevitt*, Bruce MacVittie*, Julianna Margulies, Jodie Markell*, Jesse L. Martin, Michael Mastro*, Michele Mayas*, Jean Marie McKee*, Jack Merrill*, Lisa Beth Miller*, Rob Morrow*, Geoffrey Nauffts*, Joe Pantoliano, Pippin Parker*, Timothy Britten Parker*, Frank Pugliese*, Tim Ransom*, Theresa Rebeck*, Ron Rifkin*, John Slattery, Fisher Stevens*, Ben Stiller, Billy Strong*, Christine Taylor, Lili Taylor*, Marisa Tomei*, Nancy Travis*, Steven Weber, Bradley White*, Gareth Williams*, Kelly Wolf*, George Xenos*, Missy Yager*, Andy Yerkes and MORE.

Naked Angels Announces Andy Donald as new Artistic Director

NAKED ANGELS

Announces Andy Donald as new Artistic Director

Andy Donald, current Associate Artistic Director of Naked Angels since April 2009, will assume the role of Artistic Director of the company in July of 2011, succeeding current Artistic Director Geoffrey Nauffts, who has held the position since September 2007. Nauffts, a Tony-nominated Naked Angels company member, will retain his status as a company member, take a new role on the Naked Angels Board, and continue to work with the company as a playwright and director.

Alyson Brandt, Naked Angels Board of Directors Chair said, “In addition to his contributions as writer, director and actor, Geoffrey Nauffts’ leadership has galvanized the company and the theatre community during this unprecedented time of growth at Naked Angels.  His artistic sensibilities and choices have led to some of our best accomplishments yet.  Geoffrey’s humble and gracious approach makes all of us so proud to be part of Naked Angels. We are thrilled that he plans to remain actively involved with the company in new ways once he passes the baton to Andy.”

Geoffrey Nauffts said, “I couldn’t be more thrilled with the Board’s choice for my successor as Artistic Director of Naked Angels. Andy reflects the new generation of Naked Angels and has already made a huge impact on shaping the future of the company. In all truth, I’m really not going anywhere – Naked Angels will remain my creative home, as it has been for the past twenty-five years, and I will advise on artistic matters from my role on the Board of Directors. I will continue to develop my writing with Naked Angels, and plan on directing future Naked Angels productions. I am extremely proud of the accomplishments Naked Angels has made under my tenure, and I can’t wait to see how the company continues to grow under Andy’s leadership.”

Andy Donald said, “Naked Angels was founded by some of my heroes – artists whom I’ve looked up to all of my life and only dreamed of ever working with in my career.  I can only be incredibly humbled to lead their company now, charged with shepherding their singular aesthetic and mission for provocative work into the future.  In addition to collaborating with the founding ensemble on bold new projects, I look forward to introducing our audiences to the next generation of Naked Angels’ voices and expanding our programming on stage, online, and on both coasts. ”

ANDY DONALD has been the Associate Artistic Director of Naked Angels since April 2009.  With the company, he has produced the original Off-Broadway production of Geoffrey Nauffts’ Next Fall, the American premiere of Chloe Moss’ This Wide Night, and Armed and Naked in America: a Naked Angels Issues Project, as well as initiating the inaugural Naked Radio podcast series online.  Before coming to Naked Angels, he worked as a freelance director and served as Producing Associate at the Public Theater and Second Stage Theatre, in pilot development at ABC and HBO, and as the founding artistic director of the Los Angeles-based Charlie B. Theater Company.  He holds a BFA from NYU/Tisch and an MFA from Columbia University.

ORIGINAL RADIO PODCAST PROGRAM NAKED RADIO FEATURED IN

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Naked Radio is a program that brings the work of NAKED ANGELS from the stage to the digital airwaves. The Naked Angels Writers Room meets every week, creating original content in podcast, video, and blog form. The content is available at nakedangels.com/nakedradio.

Naked Radio is profiled in today’s Wall Street Journal:

Getting Naked on the Airwaves

by Pia Catton

Radio plays may belong to the past, but they’re currently shaping the future of the nonprofit theater company Naked Angels.

Founded in 1986, Naked Angels—which takes its name from John Tytell’s book about the Beat generation—is a Chelsea-based operation that produces about three stage productions a year. The company can boast names like Marisa Tomei, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kenneth Lonergan as longtime members, but in recent years its connection to the emerging generation of writers and performers needed some cultivation.

Now, a group of 15 theater types in their late 20s is meeting every week at the Naked Angels offices on Seventh Avenue to write and rehearse weekly theatrical offerings in the style of short radio plays. The scripts are recorded and posted as Naked Radio podcasts at nakedangels.com.

“We use Naked Radio as an incubator, and we invite playwrights that we’re interested in,” said Naked Angels associate artistic director Andy Donald, who formed the adjunct group in 2009.

NAKED ANGELS’ ‘3-Step Formula’ Kicks Off New Season This Month

NAKED ANGELS’

3-Step Formula

Tuesdays@9 / 1st Mondays / Angels In Progress

KICKS OFF A NEW SEASON THIS MONTH

www.NakedAngels.com

Naked Angels is committed to strengthening a community of artists through the development and production of provocative new work.

The foundation of Naked Angels’ commitment to new work is a unique development program called the 3-Step Formula that provides writers, actors and directors with a menu of opportunities to experiment with their work – from early ideas to completed script. The first step of the Formula is Tuesdays@9, a weekly ‘open-submission’ environment in which writers and actors gather to bring the first breath of life to brand new material – ten pages at a time. Tuesdays@9 is a community salon (think the “Cheers” bar for theatre-folk), unhindered by the pressure of industry attendance or critique. The second step of the Formula is 1st Mondays, which take place monthly and facilitate the first readings of full-length plays. After 1st Mondays, a play may have the opportunity to receive a weeklong workshop at Angels In Progress, which are scheduled based on selection and availability and culminate in a public presentation.

The month of September brings the first installments of each level of Naked Angels’ 3-Step Formula:

THIS WIDE NIGHT star Edie Falco to receive Sardi’s caricature today

  EDIE FALCO

STAR OF NAKED ANGELS’ THIS WIDE NIGHT

TO RECEIVE ICONIC SARDI’S WALL CARICATURE TODAY

www.NakedAngels.com

Two-time Golden Globe and three-time Emmy Award-winner Edie Falco, currently starring opposite Alison Pill in Naked Angels’ THIS WIDE NIGHT, will be presented with an iconic Sardi’s wall caricature today, Tuesday, June 22.

“Blowsy and plain to the point of anonymity, (Falco’s) Lorraine seems to be both willing herself into and fighting against invisibility. You wouldn’t look twice at her on the street, yet there comes a moment when Ms. Falco unleashes a startling, potentially homicidal anger. This Wide Night is packed with complex, compressed life. Though its running time is less than an hour and a half, I could have raptly watched for another hour or so.”

Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“Falco is revelatory. Awkward and homely, she immerses herself in the role body and soul. This Wide Night is an altogether ideal production that manages to burrow under your skin, resonating far deeper and longer than you could imagine.”

Roma Torre, NY-1 News

The American premiere of This Wide Night starring two-time Golden Globe and three-time Emmy Award-winner Edie Falco and Tony nominee Alison Pill opened on Sunday, May 16, garnering rave reviews for its two stars and for Naked Angels’ continued commitment to producing provocative new work. The hit production quickly broke Naked Angels’ previous box office records and announced a one-week extension to its limited engagement. This Wide Night must close on Sunday, June 27.

This Wide Night is written by Blackburn Prize-winning playwright Chloe Moss and directed by Anne Kauffman.

A prison sentence isn’t over once you leave jail. Having just begun to rebuild a life on the outside, Marie (Pill) is confronted with her past when former cellmate Lorraine (Falco) shows up unannounced on her doorstep. The two outcasts, once so close on the inside, struggle to navigate a friendship beyond the prison walls – which may threaten their prospects to start over.  This Wide Night is a heartfelt and witty portrait of two lost souls trying to find their way in an unforgiving world.

This Wide Night was commissioned and first produced by Clean Break – a London-based theatre company that works with women affected by the criminal justice system – and premiered to critical acclaim in July 2008 at The Soho Theatre in London. The Times in London called the play “comic, colorful, full of pain and tenderness and truth. Raw and riveting.” In 2009 the play was awarded the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize honoring women playwrights in the English-speaking theatre.

The creative team for This Wide Night includes Rachel Hauck, Scenic Design; Emily Rebholz, Costume Design; Matt Frey, Lighting Design; Robert Kaplowitz, Sound Design; Deborah Hecht, Dialect and Vocal Coach; Desiree Maurer, Props Master; April Ann Kline, Production Stage Manager; and Dave Nelson, Production Manager.

This Wide Night is produced by NAKED ANGELS in association with Richie Jackson and H!GHBROW.

This Wide Night will be the first play in a full season of compelling new works produced by NAKED ANGELS in celebration of its 25th Anniversary as one of the most innovative theatre companies in New York. The remaining productions of the NAKED ANGELS 25th Anniversary Season will be announced soon.

Naked Angels’ chief aspiration is the strengthening of a community of artists through the development and production of provocative new work.

SINCE 1986, NAKED ANGELS has played a role in developing critically acclaimed new plays including The Substance of Fire, Side Man, Tape and Fault Lines. The core of their commitment to new artists and new audiences is the 3-Step Formula beginning with Tuesdays@9 (cold readings of plays, screenplays, stories and music in early development), 1st Mondays (public readings of new plays), Angels in Progress (weeklong workshops) and Naked Radio, a new development initiative launched this year that offers the next generation of Naked Angels the opportunity to collaborate in writing teams to create performances that are podcast to a wide audience.

Naked Angels’ latest production, Next Fall, written by Naked Angels Artistic Director Geoffrey Nauffts, played a sold-out, critically-acclaimed run Off-Broadway in the summer of 2009 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, extending three times, and opened on Broadway on Thursday, March 11th at the Helen Hayes Theatre to further critical acclaim. The production was nominated for the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League and Tony Awards for Best Play.

Naked Angels is led by Geoffrey Nauffts (Artistic Director), John Alexander (Managing Director), Andy Donald (Associate Artistic Director) and Brittany O’Neill (Producer).

This Wide Night plays the following performance schedule:

Tuesday – Friday at 7:30 PM; Saturday at 2 PM and 7:30 PM; and Sunday at 2 PM and 7 PM. The Peter Jay Sharp Theatre is located at 416 West 42nd Street.

Tickets are $70; for reservations call (212) 279-4200 or visit www.ticketcentral.com.
