“Broadway on Broadway” Celebrates New Season this Sun Sep 12 in Times Square; Kelsey Grammer hosts




Join tens of thousands of your closest friends this Sunday September 12 in Times Square when Kelsey Grammer, the Tony Award-nominated star of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES hosts “Broadway on Broadway” at 11:30 AM in the heart of Times Square.  “Broadway on Broadway” is the annual concert that celebrates the new season. Performances that day include the following:

  • ANYTHING GOES star Sutton Foster will talk about the upcoming new musicals of the season.
  • The Cagelles from LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, the 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical, perform “We Are What We Are.”

  • LOMBARDI stars Dan Lauria and Judith Light will tell the crowd about the season’s new plays.

  • MAMMA MIA! will perform the ABBA anthem “Dancing Queen.”

  • MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET:  The Tony nominated Best Musical will kick off the concert with a medley of “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Who Do You Love,” “Long Tall Sally” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”

  • PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL star and Tony Award nominee Will Swenson and the “Divas” will perform “Say a Little Prayer.” Following engagements in Australia and London’s West End, the North American premiere of the smash hit musical rolls into Toronto this fall before arriving on Broadway this spring.
  • STOMP, the off-Broadway sensation and fixture on New York’s theatrical landscape, will get the crowd going during the pre-show with a high energy performance.

CURTAINS unfolds backstage at Boston’s Colonial Theatre in 1959, where a new musical could be a Broadway smash, were it not for its talent-free leading lady. When the hapless star dies on opening night, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi (David Hyde Pierce) arrives to conduct an investigation. But the lure of the theatre proves irresistible and after an unexpected romance blooms for the stage-struck detective, he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit, as he is in solving the murder. 2007 Tony Award® and four time Emmy Award® winner David Hyde Pierce and Tony Award® and Emmy Award® winner Debra Monk star in CURTAINS, which features a book by Rupert Holmes, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, original book and concept by Peter Stone, and additional lyrics by John Kander and Rupert Holmes. The Tony Award® winning THE LION KING opened November 13, 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre and is now playing at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre (Broadway at West 45th Street). THE LION KING will officially celebrate its 10th Anniversary on Sunday, November 11. The score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer and music from an album inspired by the animated film, “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of THE LION KING score is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, embracing the Academy award-winning “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and the haunting “Shadowland.”

Julie Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING. Scenic design is by Richard Hudson; Lighting design is by Donald Holder. Costume design is by Julie Taymor. Choreography is by Garth Fagan. The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated feature and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay of THE LION KING.

SPAMALOT, the Tony Award winning musical lovingly ripped-off from the internationally famous comedy team’s most popular motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is currently playing at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th St.). SPAMALOT won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Musical. A BRONX TALE will play a limited 18 week engagement at The Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street) directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Zaks. Previews will begin on Thursday October 4, with opening night set for Thursday October 25. The engagement will run through February 10. A BRONX TALE was first mounted off Broadway in 1989 and helped establish Palminteri as a writer and actor with a distinct voice. In A BRONX TALE, Chazz Palminteri brings 18 characters to vivid life, depicting a rough childhood on Bronx streets populated by a cast of friends and enemies.
