Roundabout’s Sondheim on Sondheim Cast Recording receives Grammy nomination

The 2010 Broadway Cast Recording of the original new musical SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM, has received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Show Album.  The two-disc set was produced by PS Classics co-founder, Tommy Krasker, who has twelve Sondheim cast albums to his credit.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be announced on CBS on February 13, 2011.

SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM featured the legendary vocal talents of Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams & Tom Wopat and also featured Broadway favorites Leslie Kritzer, Norm Lewis, Euan Morton, Erin Mackey & Matthew Scott.  Music & lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim and the production was conceived & directed by James Lapine.

Roundabout Theatre Company’s SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM played on Broadway from March 19th, 2010 and opened officially on April 22nd, 2010 at Studio 54.  The limited engagement was extended due to popular demand and closed on June 27th, 2010.

The other nominees in the Grammy category for Best Musical Show Album are American Idiot, Fela!, A Little Night Music and Promises, Promises.

Sondheim brought us Into The Woods, Company, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, West Side Story and Gypsy (to name a few). By writing songs that reflect the complexity of his characters, he has changed the way we define a great musical. But even though millions of fans know his songs by heart, few know much about Stephen Sondheim himself. Until now. Roundabout presents Sondheim On Sondheim, an intimate portrait of the famed composer in his own words… and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, you’ll get an inside look at Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process. An ensemble cast of Broadway’s best will perform brand-new arrangements of over two dozen Sondheim tunes, ranging from the beloved to the obscure. Directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator James Lapine, Sondheim on Sondheim took audiences inside the life and mind of an ordinary New Yorker… with an extraordinary talent.

Special funding for the recording was been provided by The Shen Family Foundation, HRH Foundation, The Benjamin M. Rosen Family Foundation, Peter and Leni May, Daryl Roth Productions, Barry Diller, Perry and Marty Granoff Foundation and R. Martin Chavez.
