Jersey Boys is Phenomenal in Philadelphia

JERSEY BOYS, the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical, received rave reviews in Philadelphia at the Forrest Theatre, where it opened Saturday, October 2 (performances began September 30) and will play through Sunday, December 12.  From Philadelphia, JERSEY BOYS will play Boston’s Colonial Theatre Thursday, December 16 through Sunday, January 30.

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Toby Zinman raved “JERSEY BOYS is well acted, well sung and fun.  You’ll have a good time.  My hand to God.  My lips should fall off my face if I’m telling you wrong.  JERSEY BOYS, which has been touring the world, winning prizes (Tony, Grammy, Olivier) wherever it goes, is the story of guys who grew up in a tough Italian neighborhood in New Jersey and became the Four Seasons.  It’s like a singing Sopranos, with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and directed by Des McAnuff.  Jersey Boys is a biography of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; it has a huge roster of their hit songs (“Sherry,” “Rag Doll,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man”), but, unlike jukebox musicals, this show also has a narrative and dramatic characters and evokes an era: ‘A thousand years ago: Eisenhower. Rocky Marciano.’”

The Allentown Morning Call’s Myra Yellin Outwater raves “JERSEY BOYS, now electrifying audiences at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre, is an extraordinarily polished production. From its opening moments, this musical about 1960s crooner Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons dazzles and delights with its engaging, incredibly talented cast, its complex staging, its visual detail and its non-stop energy.  Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo have put together a show that is full of rocking music, graceful dance steps, engrossing visual details, neon overhead lighting effects and heart.  ‘Oh What a Night!’”

The Philadelphia Family Travel Examiner’s Erica Lamberg raves “’Oh What a Night!’  I can’t remember a show that I was more excited to see than JERSEY BOYS. Not only do I love the music of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, but everyone that I know that had seen the show told me, ‘You HAVE to see it!’  Well, last night, I saw it and I love it – it truly is Too Good To Be True!  The talent of the ensemble cast is amazing.  The musical direction is top-notch. The four Jersey Boys – Matt Bailey (Tommy DeVito), Joseph Leo Bwarie (Frankie Valli), Steve Gouveia (Nick Massi), and Quinn VanAntwerp (Bob Gaudio) all give impressive performances reaching notes effectively and adding their own on-target nuances to classic songs. The musical score, the snappy dialogue and amazing performances make this show a winner!  Many of the songs will be familiar, while a few may be less so.  During this performance hands were clapping, fans were on their feet and many people said they were coming back again during the show’s run – including me!”  To read the entire review, click here:

KYW News Radio’s Bob Nelson raves “Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre has come to life for a 2½-month engagement of “Jersey Boys,” the multi-award-winning musical based on the life and times of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.  The brilliantly staged production numbers grab the audience.  JERSEY BOYS leaves the audience in very high spirits.

All Arts Review 4 U’s Stefanie Rosinsky raves “Even if you weren’t alive during the group’s height of celebrity it will keep you bopping your head and taping your feet to the familiar tunes that spanned four decades. This show is definitely worth taking time to see, and one that will live on in your memory and the memory of those you shared the evening with for at least four more decades!
