Lend Me a Tenor’s twice Tony-nominated Jan Maxwell talks to the New York Times

“Honey, I’ve Got a Scene to Do. Be Right Back.”

In the Broadway farce “Lend Me a Tenor,” Jan Maxwell as the jealous wife Maria Merelli, spends 30 minutes onstage during the two-and-a-half-hour show, throwing tantrums in heavily accented Italian. The rest of the time, Ms. Maxwell reverts to her soft-spoken though still pointed self backstage, as she keeps an eye on her 14-year-old son, Will Maxwell-Lunney, who spends most performances doing his homework in her dressing room.

“I had Will written into my contract so we could spend more time together,” Ms. Maxwell said on Tuesday night, five minutes before curtain, as she slipped into her character’s ivory satin suit behind a partition. Will sat on the other side, in front of his laptop, stalled on the one sentence he had written for a science report about the friction of roller coasters.

“He’s at the age where there are a lot of distractions: friends, girls, life in the city, girls,” Ms. Maxwell said a moment later, while applying a generous amount of mascara. “I have a lot of time to kill, so we get to have fights about ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ the Six Day War. It’s the perfect Broadway gig for being a mom.”
