(Minneapolis/St.Paul) Following the conclusion of its enormously popular run at Playwrights Horizons, Annie Baker’s OBIE-winning new play Circle Mirror Transformation makes its regional theater premiere at the Guthrie Theater, where director Benjamin McGovern and his five-member cast bring one of this season’s most talked-about plays to life in the intimate Dowling Studio for performances through June 13.

Circle Mirror Transformation packs a wallop. Playwright Annie Baker overlays her study of simple acting methods with human desire, a history of hurt and a hunger to share stories. The result is compelling”

— Rohan Preston, Star Tribune

— John Olive, HowWasTheShow

“Director Benjamin McGovern’s cast details their characters with such exquisite detail that one is inclined merely to watch things unfold”

— Quinton Skinner, Pioneer Press

“There are big laughs in every scene, and they rarely come when you expect them to. The play is touching in its affection and sympathy for its characters and their simple human struggles, and the cast members draw empathy with their sincere performances.”

About Circle Mirror Transformation

The OBIE award-winning Circle Mirror Transformation follows five small town Vermonters as they take a community acting class, each with their own expectations. They soon learn more about each other and themselves than they bargained for. Circle Mirror Transformation premiered at Playwrights Horizons in New York in October 2009 for a scheduled month-long run. Due to its enormous popularity and critical acclaim (The New York Times called it “absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny”), it was extended several times and ran through January 2010.

The cast includes Guthrie veterans Chris Carlson (The Falls), Tracey Maloney (The Glass Menagerie), Bill McCallum (Macbeth), Angela Timberman (Third), and University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program graduate Ali Rose Dachis, in her Guthrie debut.

The creative team for the show includes Benjamin McGovern (Director/Scenic Design), Kalere A. Payton (Costume Design), Karin Olson (Lighting Design), Jo Holcomb (Dramaturg), Tree O’Halloran (Stage Manager) and Ashley Zednick (Assistant Stage Manager).

Circle Mirror Transformation continues through June 13 in the Dowling Studio at the Guthrie Theater. Single tickets are priced from $22. Tickets are now on sale through the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224, toll-free 877.44.STAGE and online at www.guthrietheater.org.
