DONMAR WAREHOUSE WINS THREE CRITICS’ CIRCLE AWARDS AND
THE THEATRE AWARD AT THE FINAL SOUTH BANK AWARDS

In a year where the Donmar Warehouse has played to capacity houses, both at its home base in Covent Garden and the Donmar West End season at the Wyndham’s Theatre, the company has today received awards at simultaneous events across London.

In a ceremony at the Prince of Wales Theatre for the Critics’ Circle Awards, the company received three awards – the first Best Actress Award for Rachel Weisz for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in Rob Ashford’s critically acclaimed production of Tennessee WilliamsA Streetcar Named Desire. Weisz has already received the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress for this role.

Jude Law received The John and Wendy Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance for his role as Hamlet in Michael Grandage’s sell-out production – the final show in the company’s year-long residency at the Wyndham’s Theatre. Following performances in London, the production transferred for a successful season on Broadway.

The final award goes to Christopher Oram for Best Designer for his work on Michael Grandage’s critically acclaimed production of the world première of John Logan’s Red.

At the final South Bank Show Awards at the Dorchester, the company won the Theatre Award for A Streetcar Named Desire – the Donmar’s Associate Director, and director of the production, Rob Ashford collected the award accompanied by Rachel Weisz (Blanche DuBois), Elliot Cowan (Stanley Kowalski) and Ruth Wilson (Stella).

Michael Grandage, the Donmar’s Artistic Director, said today, “2009 was undoubtedly one of the most important years in the Donmar’s history and I am delighted HAMLET, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and RED have all been recognised in four separate awards today. These productions represent our commitment to deliver work of the highest quality and to engage with as many people as possible. It is wonderful to have our work honoured in this way.”
