MTC ANNOUNCES 7TH EXTENSION FOR RUINED

MANHATTAN THEATRE CLUB

ANNOUNCES SEVENTH EXTENSION OF

LYNN NOTTAGE’S PULITZER PRIZE WINNING

RUINED

MOST ACCLAIMED PLAY OF THE YEAR NOW ON SALE THROUGH SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 AT NEW YORK CITY CENTER – STAGE I

Manhattan Theatre Club is pleased to announce the production of Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize winning RUINED has been extended again at MTC at New York City Center – Stage I (131 West 55th Street). Tickets for the production, directed by Kate Whoriskey, are now on sale through Sunday, August 2.

RUINED is a co-production between Manhattan Theatre Club and Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.

This marks the seventh New York extension for the production which on Sunday, August 2 will have played 22 preview performances and 198 regular performances, making RUINED the longest running production at Stage I since the 1992 production of Terrence McNally’s Lips Together, Teeth Apart.

Prior to becoming a hit at MTC, RUINED was a resounding success at the Goodman, where the production opened in November 2008, received stellar reviews from Chicago critics, and played an extended run at the Goodman’s Owen Theatre prior to coming to New York.

In a statement Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove said, “We are delighted to extend RUINED again thanks to the enormous response the production has received over the last 20 weeks at City Center – Stage I.

“Audiences have given RUINED standing ovations from its very first performance and we have been thrilled that the show has attracted the attention of a wide range of people including news commentators, celebrities, human rights groups, critics, and ticket buyers, many of whom aren’t traditional theatre goers.

RUINED has resonated with every one who has seen it, becoming one of the most talked about plays of the season. We are extremely proud of Lynn, Kate, and our terrific ensemble and we look forward to having RUINED at City Center for the remainder of this record-breaking run.”

RUINED is the most acclaimed new play of 2009, having received the following awards:

  • 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
    • RUINED is the first Off-Broadway play to receive the Pulitzer since 2000.
  • New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play
  • Two Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Play and Outstanding Music for a Play
    • RUINED is the first Off-Broadway play to receive the Outstanding Play Award in 10 years.
  • The Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play
  • Two Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Play
  • Four OBIE Awards including Best New American Play
    • Current cast members Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Russell G. Jones also received OBIE awards for their performances in RUINED
  • A Theatre World Award for cast member Condola Rashad
  • The Clarence Derwent Award for cast member Quincy Tyler Bernstine.

From Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, the author of such plays as Fabulation and Intimate Apparel and director Kate Whoriskey (The Piano Teacher, Fabulation), comes this haunting, probing work about the resilience of the human spirit during times of war. Set in a small mining town in Democratic Republic of Congo, this powerful play follows Mama Nadi, a shrewd businesswoman in a land torn apart by civil war. But is she protecting or profiting by the women she shelters? How far will she go to survive? Can a price be placed on a human life?
