THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING
OPENS IN LONDON
TO CRITICAL ACCLAIM
THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING opened Wednesday, April 30th in London to glowing reviews. Following a sold-out run on Broadway in 2007, Academy Award and Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave returns to the London stage in Joan Didion’s stunning new play, THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, directed by Academy Award nominee David Hare. THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, based on Didion’s memoir, plays at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre. This is a limited engagement through July 15th only. Below is a sampling of what critics are saying about the production:
DAILY TELEGRAPH
“A magnificent solo performance from Vanessa Redgrave… at her best. David Hare directs a simple, deeply felt production, with beautifully evocative designs by Bob Crowley… as moving as anything we are likely to encounter in a theatre this year.”
- Charles Spencer
THE TIMES
4 STARS – “No actress can be more emotionally true.”
- Benedict Nightingale
THE GUARDIAN
“Redgrave inhabits the very soul of the character and lets you see Didion’s honesty, guilt, irony, and capacity for self-examination. It is a consummate piece of acting reinforced by Hare’s austerely beautiful production.”
- Michael Billington
DAILY EXPRESS
4 STARS – “Redgrave triumphs. A stunning performance… deeply moving and memorable…reasserts her standing as one of this country’s truly great actresses. One of the most powerful performance to be seen on the London stage for some time and David Hare handles it with much delicacy.”
- Paul Callan
In THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, Vanessa Redgrave relives an almost unfathomably shocking period in Joan Didion’s life. Capturing the compassion, humor, and stark bewilderment of a fiercely intelligent woman whose world lurches suddenly from the ordinary to the unimaginable, THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING is a love letter to a child and a tribute to an extraordinary, unconventional marriage, told with raw candor and a brilliant storyteller’s gift for the absurd.
THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING was 2005’s publishing phenomenon – winner of the National Book Award, a Pulitzer finalist, 30 weeks on The New York Times hardcover bestseller list and the subject of worldwide media attention, including a New York Times Magazine cover story and worldwide critical acclaim. The paperback edition of The Year of Magical Thinking was released on Thursday, February 13th, 2007. Joan Didion’s play adaptation of her acclaimed novel opened on March 29, 2007 at Broadway’s Biltmore Theatre for 25 week limited engagement, starring Vanessa Redgrave.
The design team for THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING includes Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (Scenic Design), Oscar winner Ann Roth (Costume Design), Jean Kalman (Lighting Design) and Paul Arditti (Sound Design).
